Happy Birthday Zara!

December 16, 2008

Miss Zara is one of our Little Blessings Club graduates and I have missed seeing her and her family every few months now that she’s a big girl!  You may remember her as our “Rosy Baby” from the studio wall portraits… and she’s still every bit as beautiful.  She came in with her new baby brother and we did sessions for both of them, so I’m going to keep them separate so each gets their own special time.  Zara is so smart and funny and has the cutest little voice.  She has so much spirit and is always fun to have around.  Thanks for coming in Zara, and for bringing your mom and grandma and new brother!

Monday with Mac and Cheese

December 15, 2008

I know: Mac and Cheese have been taking a little time off.  When things get busy with the studio, we just don’t have enough time for the fun stuff.  But now they are back by popular demand.  :-)   Thank you for all the emails about “where are the kid’s reviews???”

This week, McCurdy is too busy playing Lego Star Wars (his reward for letting me do portraits of him this weekend) so Charlotte got to pick out the book all by herself.  She chose Eric Carle’s The Tiny Seed.  Why?  “Because it has my favorite thing on the front — a flower.  And also because the illustrations are beautiful.  And it’s about nature and the cycle of plants, and I like learning about nature.”

Her song choice for this week is a Christmas tune.  I know y’all are probably about sick of Christmas music by now… especially since we have two local stations who have dropped their regular programming in favor of an all-holiday, all the time format.  I’ve found that once I finished processing pre-holiday orders, I began enjoying the sounds of the season a little more, although we’re now seeking out Christmas songs other than the top 40 they play on the radio all day. If I have to hear Madonna sing “Santa Baby” one more time I might go nuts.  So this non-traditional Christmas song was chosen by Charlotte as well, just for you: Strange Way to Save the World.

I hope you’re all having a wonderful week!  The kids are anxious to be on Christmas vacation and I have to admit, I am too.  We’ve been blessed with a busy year and I am thankful, but I am also looking forward to spending a little time with my own kids.  We have appointments this week and then we’re taking the next couple of weeks off, starting Friday afternoon, so I may or may not be blogging.  And just a head’s up: we are now booking for January and February 2009 appointments, so if you know you will need an appointment in the next month, please give me a call to get on the calendar.  I’ll be around this week to share some more recent sessions, because I know many of you are wondering what the hold up is with seeing your kid on the blog.  Thanks for your patience during our busy season!  :-)

The Silverman Family

December 12, 2008

Here are the Silvermans, who came in for a family portrait a couple of months ago.  I had so much fun with them at their downtown “urban family” session — their two boys are adorable and the whole family is simply delightful.

In the course of almost every session with a new client, I can be pretty sure that they will comment on how many portraits of my own kids I must have at home.  Usually, people say something like “I bet the walls in your home are FULL.”  Well yes, I do have portraits of my kids here.  Quite a few, in fact, and most of them are biiiiiiig.  But I don’t have as many recent photos as people would think, because its not often that I have the time to photograph my own kids.  And even less often that they want to be photographed.  I made a promise to myself to capture more of my own kid’s moments this year, so yesterday when I found myself with some unexpected free time on a beautiful late afternoon, the kids and I headed out to shoot a little.

So… this is what it looks like when a photographer takes her outgoing and adorable “four and three quarter” year old out to do portraits on an unusually cold December afternoon in South Texas.

We had just gotten out to our location and already, her patience was worn pretty thin… she chose the outfit, and she let me choose the location, but she really wanted to do her own posing.  Since Charley’s posing is usually very “Hannah Montana” and that’s not really the look I was going for (since I just wanted a Christmas portrait for the grandparents) I told her she couldn’t art direct these.  But she was cold.  And she needed mittens.  And maybe a cute matching scarf.  With little pom-poms.

So once I realized we were nearing the meltdown stage, I decided to let her wiggle a little bit.  She was cold and she just needed to move a little more.  The whole project was totally worth it just to get this series of dancing shots.  She obviously gets her wicked rock-star dance moves from me.

We were exhausted and very cold when we got home, but the whole experience reminded me of how much I need this time with my kids.  I help other people document their family history every day, and yesterday reminded me of how important it is for me to make sure that my family history is being recorded, too.  And yes, we did get some “pretty shots” of Charlotte.  I’ll need to go back out with Mac, who would always rather be behind the camera than in front of it, but as far as Charley is concerned, we accomplished our mission for the day.

And yes, Laura, the selective color is just for you.  I know how you love it.  ;-)

Ainsley is 4

December 11, 2008

Here are a few more favorites from Ainsley’s session — and yes, I really am way behind on blogging.  ;-)   I always have so much fun with Ainsley.  She is a classic beauty, and this time we took her outside for a little more of a modern, urban look.  I love the contrast of her old-fashioned curls and softness against the downtown setting.

Thank you so much to everyone who turned out for our Holiday Charity sessions a couple of weeks ago!  Everyone’s portraits should be in by now and we have already called about half of you to arrange for pickup.  I will be out of the office until Monday, but those who have not heard from me can expect a phone call or an email then.  We had some wonderful, beautiful children in this year — some that we’ve known for years, and some that we met for the first time.  Thank you, all of you, for being so fantastic and for your toy donations!  And Merry Christmas!

Taylor and Jacob

December 3, 2008

Meet Taylor and Jacob, from one of our last pre-holiday sessions of 2008.  I love kids these ages, who still think it’s kind of fun to do a portrait session as long as they get to talk about the things they’re interested in and don’t have to look silly (unless they want to).  These two were so much fun to work with.  The main goal was a portrait of the two of them together, but as always, we broke off for shots of each kid individually, too.  We created a lot of really nice portraits for their mom, but these are just a few that we both really loved.  Thanks, Gina and Taylor and Jacob!  It was so nice getting to know you.

Superstar

December 3, 2008

My bff Laura is shooting holiday charity sessions this weekend, and she asked Charlotte to stop by today to test out the set and do a little modeling.  I looooooove how pretty the set looks and the portraits she created of my little bug are just darling.  Here’s one sample.

Thank you, Laura!

Meet Seth

December 2, 2008

Seth is one of our newest babies, which makes Noah one of our newest big brothers.  You might remember Noah from one of our summer “Fresh Faces” sessions, when he was waiting for his brother to be born.  It is always so interesting to me to see who each new baby resembles… what I think at the session always changes when I look at the images, because I see different features that remind me of one or the other parent or grandparent.  Looking at these as a group, though, I have to say: Seth, you look a lot like your daddy to me.  It was so great to meet you, Sweetheart Seth, and Noah, you’re a great big brother (just like I knew you would be).  Here are a few sneak peeks for your mom, who has been waiting so patiently.  :)

If you haven’t had a chance yet, go out and look at the moon.  Jupiter and Venus are very close and it’s beautiful — it’s such a clear night that you can see the event really well.

And just a quick update: I have not received the shipment of portraits or cards from our Holiday Charity event yet, but I expect them any day now.  I’ll shoot you all an email or give you a call as soon as it’s in.  Tomorrow I’m catching up on all the phone calls and emails we recieved in the last week while we’ve been closed for the move and the holidays!  I hope you all had a blessed and safe Thanksgiving with your families.
