The blog is moving…

December 7, 2011

{Deep breath.} Yes, really.

I’ve been worried about what it would mean to “give up” the brand. I worked so hard to create “Shelby Lane” that, even though I’m now Shelby Newman, I’ve kept the business name. But it doesn’t fit right anymore. I’ve been on a portrait hiatus for awhile now, and as time has passed, I’ve found that it’s really not such a scary idea after all. And that it’s time to rethink the direction I want the photography part of my life to go.

I’ve always loved helping new photographers reach their goals, so that’s where I feel my focus needs to be for now. And in light of some of the recent trends I’ve seen in portraiture lately (including the dangerous newborn stunts at some portrait sessions) there seems to be a need for education at that very, very basic level. So I’m reaching out to moms with information on how to cherish their own photographs, why they need a professional and what to look for in a photographer, and to newbie photographers about how to get their businesses started the right way.

I’d love for you to join me over at the new Capturing Life blog. Make sure to update your bookmarks! And to all my photographer readers out there: I will be looking for guest posts, so drop me a line on the new blog if you have a great idea for an article. Thanks for all the years of support over here at ShelbyLane.net!

Summertime!

June 8, 2009

Summertime is here!  I hope you’re all staying cool and having fun now that the big kids are out of school.  We spent today doing all sorts of “first day of summer” activities and now I’m exhausted. I think we’ll all have an early bedtime tonight.  I am determined to work less and spend more time with my kids this summer… and maybe take a real vacation (meaning one that has nothing to do with photography or photographers!).

I know that I’ve been a bad, bad blogger. I’m caught up on orders and phone calls and processing, though, so that’s something!  I’m planning on taking the blog in a slightly different direction this summer, if I can ever get back into the blogging mood!  :)   One big shout-out: BETH, I am getting your emails but I don’t think you’re getting mine, and the phone number I have on file for you has changed. I hate for people to think I’m ignoring them, so I hope you check the blog!

Don’t forget that we have beach sessions scheduled for near Corpus Christi the weekend of the 20th.  I do still have a space or two available.  For you non-beach clients who are considering a summer session, I’m not accepting as many sessions this summer as I have in years past so if you need to get on the calendar please call me ASAP.  We are currently accepting Victoria/Crossroads area appointments, and for you San Antonio/Austin folks my sessions in your area will be extremely limited after July.  Once school starts I just won’t be able to make that drive more than once a month, so if you want to do a portrait session, now’s the time.

And because a blog post without photos is boring… here is a snap of Bugs coloring in the kitchen last night.  I don’t often pick up the camera if I’m not working, and I’ve realized that I don’t have many photos of my kids just being my kids, so that is a personal project for the summer.  :)

Happy Birthday Hannah!

February 16, 2009

Poor Hannah has been waiting for her “featured session” blog for weeks now — and yes, I do have a backlog of sessions to blog.  We have had a lot going on here… so much that I feel like I need to be getting sessions edited and client orders processed before I can even think about blogging.  I promise to catch up eventually!  Please remember that we are closed on Sunday and Monday so if you call or email on one of those days, I probably won’t get back to you until Tuesday.

So thank you for being so patient, Hannah!  I can’t believe this beautiful little girl is already a year old.  She has the sweetest little personality and I love spending time with her.  Happy birthday, Miss Hannah!  I’ll see you this week, because your order is here!  :)

Tagged

October 8, 2008

I just got tagged by my friend Laura. Thanks! I’ve never been tagged before and I feel so special.  ;)

SO, here are the rules;
1. Link to the person who tagged you (Laura Wootan)
2. Post the rules on your blog
3. Write six random thoughts about yourself
4. Tag six or so people at the end of your post
5. Let each person know he or she has been tagged
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is posted

Random Thoughts About Me:

1. I sing in the car.  All the time.
2. I need for the stereo volume to be on an even number or a 5.
3. I hate Chinese food with a passion but I could eat Tex-Mex every day.
4. I love curling up on the sofa with a book on a stormy day.
5. My favorite color is red.
6. My kids are the joys of my life.

Now, I get to be the one to tag.  You’re it!  :)

Long time, no blog

September 27, 2007

Okay, I know.  I make promises to be a better blogger and then life and work get in the way.  Girls, you can stop emaling me about how I need to update the blog.  :)   At least, for this week.

We’ve had a weird couple of months at the studio — some weeks were very very busy.  Others were very very quiet, which is good because it gave us a little time to catch up.  We are getting ready for the holiday rush, so check your email boxes for this morning’s mini-newsletter.  In case you don’t get it, here’s the scoop.

We’re running out of storage space and trying to get things organized for the upcoming holiday season.  SO, in the next few weeks we will be archiving all of our sessions from January 2006 to July 2007.  If you want to order additional pictures from these sessions, or if you’re one of the few who never ordered, NOW IS THE TIME.  Place your order before October 15th without a minimum archival order, and we’ll be able to deliver prints within a normal turn around time.  (Normally, archived print orders take longer to process because we have to retreive the images from storage).

Next, in honor of tomorrow’s Comal County Fair Day, the studio will be open for anyone who wants to come up and watch the parade in the cool air conditioning.  We will be having a ONE DAY SALE — book a session (with reservation fees paid) tomorrow, September 29th, and receive $25 off your session fee!  Can’t commit to a date right now?  This applies to gift certificates as well.  They make great gifts for a loved one, or just for your own family.  So all gift certificate purchases of $150 or more tomorrow will receive $25 off, too.  We have been busy booking holiday sessions and they are filling up fast!

This summer has been busier than I expected.  :)   And yes, I’m still a bad blogger.  We shot beach sessions at Mustang Island last weekend so I will share a couple of quick snapshots of my kids.  I never did find the time to photograph them "officially."  I think we’ll go back in a few weeks, just for the day, so I can have some new portraits of my own kids.
